El árbol de la sangre interweaves two stories set 25 years apart in the Basque Country of Spain. In the present, Rebeca and Marc, a troubled couple, travel to Rebeca's grandparents' house to write about their respective parents' pasts in hopes of resolving their own relationship issues. Twenty-five years ago, Macarena, Rebeca's mother, was a famous rock singer who retired after becoming pregnant. Meanwhile, Nuria, Marc's mother, was forced to leave her summer house due to threats from a Russian mob looking to use it as a headquarters. Macarena later meets Victor, a fan who falls in love with her and assumes Rebeca as his own daughter. Concurrently, Nuria works as a literary editor, meets Amaia, an aspiring writer whose first novel becomes a hit, and marries Olmo, Victor's brother.
