Al Stump (Kevin Costner), a renowned sportswriter, is commissioned by Ty Cobb (Tommy Lee Jones) to co-write his authorized autobiography before his death. Initially believing Cobb's claim of being misunderstood and wanting to set the record straight as 'the greatest ball-player ever', Stump spends time with Cobb, only to discover that the public's negative opinion is largely accurate. In Stump's presence, Cobb reveals himself to be angry, violent, racist, misogynistic, and abusive towards everyone around him. Struggling between revealing the truth about Cobb's dark nature and grim past, or succumbing to his pressure for a whitewashed version of his character, Stump writes two different books: one tailored to Cobb's liking, and another reflecting the harsh reality he witnessed.
