The Moochmore family is headed by Barry, a politician with a wandering eye, and his wife Shirley who suffers from an undiagnosed mental illness. Their five teenage daughters believe they too have some kind of mental illness, as they are convinced that if they're not crazy, then they're just unpopular. When Shirley has a nervous breakdown and is committed to a mental hospital by Barry, he finds himself alone with his five teenage daughters whom he barely knows. Desperate for help, Barry impulsively picks up a hitchhiker named Shaz and installs her in his home as a nanny to his daughters.
