Harry Bailey returns to his university after serving in Vietnam to pursue a master's degree in English teaching. He becomes an unwitting hero among the radical student body who admire him for his military service but still sees the absurdity of both sides' perspectives. Harry finds himself mediating between the reactionary administration and the impetuous students, often trying to balance their conflicting objectives. Adding to his tension is his girlfriend Jan's desire to marry him and settle down in suburbia. As the pressure mounts, Harry finally loses control during his master's dissertation meeting as another protest erupts around him.
