New York graduate student Susan Roberts arrives at the isolated French estate of composer Henry Ryman's widow, Danielle, to research his works for her thesis. She meets their son Georges, wheelchair-bound since a tennis accident six years ago, who harbors emotional pain beyond his physical limitations. Susan resembles Georges' ex-girlfriend Catherine, who left him after the accident. As Susan stays longer, she uncovers family secrets that threaten her life and reveal her arrival was no coincidence.
