In 1930, renowned filmmaker Fritz Lang is seeking inspiration for his next project, a sound film that's significantly smaller in scale than his previous works. His relationship with long-time collaborator and wife Thea von Harbou is strained due to her growing admiration for National Socialism. During his research, Lang comes across reports about a serial killer from Düsseldorf. He travels to the Rhineland to join crime commissioner Ernst in the investigation, hoping to gain insight into the psychology of criminals for his upcoming film. Peter is arrested as a suspect, and Lang interviews him while also encountering Anna, a friend of one of the victims who is suspected to be an eyewitness. Anna bears a striking resemblance to Lang's first wife Lisa, who had shot Lang's lover Thea von Harbou when she caught them together. As Lang delves deeper into the investigation, he finds himself haunted by memories of his past and grappling with the dark nature of the crimes.
