Golden Rut (2016) follows Jake Harper, a once-popular high school athlete turned small-town gym teacher. Ten years after graduating, he's still stuck in his glory days, refusing to grow up and take responsibility for his life. When his former teammates start disappearing, Jake realizes that his best friend, Mickey, has gone missing too. Determined to find him, Jake embarks on a wild road trip with his eccentric neighbor, Vera, and his childhood friend, Billy. Along the way, they encounter a series of misadventures that force Jake to confront his past and face the reality that his glory days are over.
Golden Rut is a comedic exploration of arrested development, set against the backdrop of a small American town. Directed by Nick Holden and Josh Ashy Holden, who also wrote the script, the film stars Jake Hoffman as Jake Harper, a man child struggling to move on from his high school football days. The story takes a turn when Jake's friends start vanishing, prompting him to embark on a journey of self-discovery with Vera (played by Andrea Savage) and Billy (played by Max Bartos). Premiered at the Austin Film Festival in 2016, Golden Rut offers a blend of comedy, drama, and coming-of-age themes that resonate with audiences even years after its release.
