In the late 1970s, in a conservative and religious small town in Northern Finland, two families of architects face the upheaval of societal changes as the sexual revolution arrives. The story is seen through the eyes of the two 13-year-old brothers, Mikko and Elias, known locally as the 'Star Boys.' The boys' parents, once content with their family lives and small-town values, become swept up in the spirit of the times, experimenting with open relationships and sexual liberation. This newfound freedom leads to tension and confusion within both families, especially for the impressionable teenagers who witness their parents' actions firsthand. After a disastrous toga party that ends in tragedy, nothing is ever the same for Mikko, Elias, or their parents. As they struggle to cope with the repercussions of that fateful night, the boys must navigate their own path towards understanding and healing.
'Kaiken se kestää' (2017) is a Finnish drama film directed by Visa Koiso-Kanttila, based on his own experiences growing up during this tumultuous period. Set against the backdrop of Finland's sexual revolution in the late 1970s, the film explores themes of family dynamics, morality, and the impact of societal change on small communities. Through the eyes of its young protagonists, Mikko and Elias, we witness the tension between traditional values and newfound freedoms as their parents grapple with their own desires for love and liberation. Despite dealing with heavy subjects such as infidelity, divorce, and tragedy, 'Kaiken se kestää' offers a warm and ultimately hopeful perspective on human resilience, particularly that of its young characters.
