Thelma, a sheltered and devout Christian Biology freshman from rural Norway, leaves home for the first time to attend university in Oslo against her parents' wishes. Initially lonely, she befriends Anja, another student. As Thelma's feelings of desire and independence grow, so do inexplicable seizures that cause violent physical phenomena.
