Ted Crawford, a successful structural engineer, shoots his wife Jennifer and frames Lieutenant Rob Nunally for her murder. He confesses but asks for an immediate trial, knowing he can manipulate the legal system to his advantage. Prosecutor Willy Beachum is assigned to the case, seen as a 'slam dunk' victory due to Crawford's confession.
