In Grandview, Illinois, high school senior Tim Pearson dreams of studying oceanography in Florida after graduation but feels tied down by his overbearing father's expectations for him to attend college locally on a full scholarship. He meets Michelle "Mike" Cody, a 27-year-old woman struggling to run the town's demolition derby track and Ernie "Slam" Webster, the Speedrome's king whose wife is cheating on him with dreams of being with Mike. Tim becomes attracted to Mike, sparking a love triangle as Slam also has feelings for her. As graduation approaches, Tim grapples with his desire to leave Grandview and pursue his dream while navigating these new romantic entanglements.
