Elizabeth McGovern was born on July 18, 1961, and began her acting career while studying at Juilliard. She made her film debut in Ordinary People (1980). After completing her education, she appeared Off-Broadway and later in famous theaters. In 1981, McGovern earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime.

Set in the late 1940s California, 'Racing with the Moon' follows Henry and Nicky, two best friends from working-class families, as they prepare to leave for World War II. Henry falls for the wealthy newcomer, Caddie Winger, believing her to be affluent.
