Joanna Shimkus Poitier, born Joanna Shimkus on October 30, 1943 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, is a Canadian film actress. Born to Joseph Shimkus, a Lithuanian Jew, and Marie Petrie, of Irish Catholic descent, she was raised primarily in Montreal, Quebec. At age nineteen, she moved to Paris where she worked as a fashion model before transitioning into acting. Her debut film was 'De l'amour' (1964), followed by notable roles in 'Les aventuriers' (1967) and 'Tante Zita' (1968). She married actor Sidney Poitier in 1976, with whom she has two daughters, Anika and Sydney Tamiia Poitier. They have three grandchildren between them.
