Set in 1630, 'Forfølgelsen' (The Chase) begins as Eli Laupstad arrives at a small mountain village. She witnesses a woman's capture, alleged to be a witch. Eli meets Aslak Gimra, who reveals the woman was suspected of sorcery and taken by the church authorities. Seeking employment, Eli approaches Ingeborg Eriksdotter Jaatun, head of the largest farm in her husband's absence. Ingeborg permits Eli to work weaving and dyeing yarn, allowing her to stay on the farm Laupstad where her ancestors once lived.
