In Kelly Reichardt's 'River of Grass,' Cozy, a neglected woman living near Florida's Everglades with her indifferent husband and ignored children, escapes her mundane life by fantasizing about being a dancer, acrobat, or gymnast. One night, she meets Lee at a bar – he's jobless, homeless, and unwittingly carries Cozy's father's missing handgun (the cop dad lost it while chasing a robber). They impulsively decide to swim in a wealthy neighbor's pool after climbing the fence. While playing with the gun, they believe they've killed the owner, prompting them to flee together. Despite their lack of planning and resources – including not having money for tolls – an unusual bond forms between Cozy and Lee as they evade the law.
