In 'Ironweed', set in Albany, New York on Halloween night, 1938, Francis Phelan (Jack Nicholson) and Helen Archer (Meryl Streep), two homeless drifters, return to their birth city. Once a major league pitcher, Francis now digs graves at the cemetery, haunted by visions of his past including ghosts of two men he killed. His infant son's grave also weighs heavily on him, as he was responsible for its death. Helen, a former radio singer, is ill and they're surrounded by reminders of their own mortality and the deaths of others, like their friend who has cancer. That night, out drinking, Helen tries to sing at a bar. The next day, Francis visits his estranged wife and children, meets his grandson but ultimately decides not to stay. Meanwhile, Helen finds them a hotel room. Throughout, the film explores their code of fairness and loyalty amidst their mistakes and dereliction.
'Ironweed' is a poignant drama directed by Héctor Babenco in 1987, based on William Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. The film centers around Francis Phelan (Jack Nicholson) and Helen Archer (Meryl Streep), two alcoholics and drifters navigating through life during the Great Depression era. It's a story of redemption, loss, and the unbreakable bond between two people united by their shared past and struggles. The narrative is marked by themes of mortality, guilt, and loyalty, with Nicholson delivering a powerful performance as the troubled Phelan.
