In this period drama set in 19th century Germany, Baron Geert von Instetten returns from military service to take up a post as coastal district administrator. He hopes this will lead to promotion and a colonial posting. Von Instetten is secretly still in love with Luise von Briest, an old friend who has married local landowner von Briest. They arrange for their daughter Effie (née Fontane) to marry the Baron instead of her preferred cousin Dagobert. Effie finds her new husband's house creepy, filled with exotic artifacts from his ocean captain uncle who was said to be haunted by his Chinese servant. Feeling lonely and neglected in her marriage, Effie begins an affair with swaggering Major von Crampas. This leads to scandal when the affair is discovered, resulting in tragic consequences.
