In a small Illinois town in 1957, Walker Payne struggles to provide for his two daughters, Sarah and Beth, after the coal mine he works at closes due to government regulations. Walker is an imperfect father, battling with alcoholism and past relationships, but he loves his girls deeply. He lives with Audrey now, having moved out from his estranged wife Lou Ann, a waitress raising their children alone while demanding child support. When Lou Ann raises her demand to $5000 for nursing school, Walker finds himself desperate for money. At a baseball game, he meets Syrus, who sees potential in Walker's dog Brute for illegal dog-fighting. Despite Walker's initial reluctance and Chester's intervention (a friend who takes in strays), Lou Ann forces Walker's hand by threatening to keep his daughters from him until she gets her money. With Brute proving surprisingly skilled but at risk of serious injury, Walker must navigate the dangerous world of underground dog-fighting while trying to maintain a relationship with his daughters and secure their future.
