Sarah Hay was born in 1987 and raised in Princeton, New Jersey with her siblings. Her grandparents were influential figures in the arts: her grandmother was an art dealer in New York, and her grandfather a member of the New York Philharmonic. Both parents are amateur dancers and psychologists. Hay began ballet at age three, joining the School of American Ballet in New York City at eight, then attending the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School of Ballet at the American Ballet Theatre. Despite being popular outside ballet school, she felt like an outsider due to her non-wealthy background. Describing herself as a 'troublemaker' during childhood, Hay decided to pursue ballet professionally in her teenage years.
