The Hotel Splendide is a grim spa hotel located on a remote and cold island, accessible only once a month by ferry. The hotel was established by the late Dame Blanche and continues to be operated by her grown children according to her strict specifications. Kath, who used to work there as sous chef, receives an anonymous letter informing her of Dame Blanche's death. She returns to the hotel, hoping to bring some warmth and light into its dreary atmosphere with her cooking. However, she must contend with the eccentric staff and the hotel's unique 'treatments', such as enema therapy.
