In the antebellum South, a mixed-race slave named Drum is born to a white prostitute, Marianna, and raised by her black lesbian lover, Rachel. As he grows older, Drum becomes a skilled fighter, often forced to bare-knuckle-box other slaves for the amusement of their owners. Among them is Bernard, a gay Frenchman who harbors lustful feelings towards Drum but seeks revenge after being rejected. Eventually, Drum and his friend Blaise are sold to plantation owner Hammond. Hammond purchases Regine as his personal concubine, causing jealousy from his fiancée Augusta. Sophie, Hammond's daughter, attempts to seduce both Drum and Blaise but is spurned. After Sophie falsely accuses Blaise of rape, he is put in chains awaiting castration. During a dinner party celebrating Hammond and Augusta's engagement, Drum frees Blaise, sparking a violent slave uprising. Bernard shoots Blaise during the chaos, leading to Drum brutally retaliating against him. The rebellion results in numerous casualties from both slaves and slavers, but Drum ultimately saves Hammond and Augusta.
