In Brighton during the late 1950s, disgraced former cop turned private detective Tony Aaron specializes in fabricating adultery cases for divorce proceedings. He ropes his wife into one of these schemes, using her as a fictional co-respondent with painter Carlo Stasio. However, their plan goes awry when they are both found shot dead in the hotel room. Tony's ex-partner Frank, now leading the Brighton police force, is tasked with solving the case. He focuses on two main suspects: Angeline, Stasio's mistress who stands to inherit his estate, and Tony himself, whose alibi seems questionable.
