In 17th century Amsterdam, renowned painter Rembrandt is commissioned by his pregnant wife Saskia to paint a group portrait of the Amsterdam Musketeer Militia, which will later be known as 'The Nightwatch'. As he works on the painting, Rembrandt uncovers a conspiracy among the merchant-class militia members, who are maneuvering for power and wealth. When he discovers a foul murder, he decides to incorporate his findings into the portrait, exposing the corruption in Dutch society. However, his actions provoke revenge from the conspirators. Saskia dies, and the vengeful merchants set out to destroy Rembrandt's reputation and finances. They seduce him with a treacherous mistress, Geertje, attempt to blind him, ruin his financial situation, insult his young mistress Hendrickje, and conspire against his son. Despite their efforts, 'The Nightwatch', with its bold aesthetics and content, solidifies Rembrandt's reputation as a master-painter but ultimately contributes to his social and financial downfall.
