In 16th century Venice, Veronica Franco, born well-born but penniless, cannot marry Marco Venier, whom she loves. To improve her status and secure a chance at true love, Veronica becomes a courtesan, one of the exotic companions favored by rich and powerful Venetian men. Despite initial reservations, Veronica courageously uses her intelligence, beauty, and charm to succeed in this new role. She even aids Venice diplomatically when she helps convince France to provide military aid against the Turks. However, her success attracts jealousy from a rival courtesan, and when the plague descends upon Venice, the Church accuses Veronica of witchcraft. At her inquisition, she must defend herself and speak for all women while calling on Marco's courage.
