In the Soviet Union during the Stalin era, a group of artists are tasked with creating a mural depicting happy peasants and workers for a new government building. The lead artist, Fyodor, struggles with his conscience as he realizes that the mural is intended to glorify Stalin's regime while ignoring the harsh realities of life under communism. As Fyodor begins to incorporate true images of suffering into his painting, his fellow artists grow concerned about his deviation from the official line and report him to the authorities. Meanwhile, a young woman named Zoia arrives at the studio, claiming to be an apprentice artist but secretly working as an informant for the government. She becomes involved with Fyodor, further complicating his situation. The film follows Fyodor's attempts to express his true beliefs through his art while navigating the dangerous political climate of Stalin's Russia.
'Fiofaniya, risuyushchaya smert' (1991) is a Soviet-era thriller set against the backdrop of Stalinist oppression. Directed by Vladimir Alenikov and based on his own screenplay co-written with Yuriy Perov and Katherine Martin, the film explores themes of artistic expression, censorship, and the human cost of totalitarianism. It centers around Fyodor, an artist commissioned to paint a propaganda mural, who finds himself torn between his desire for creative freedom and the consequences of speaking out against the state. The story is punctuated by Zoia's character, whose dual role as both lover and informant adds tension to the already charged atmosphere.
