The 'Road Within' follows 17-year-old adolescent Alex, diagnosed with Tourette's Syndrome and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). After accidentally burning down his mother's kitchen while attempting to bake a cake for her birthday, Alex is sent to a behavioral facility run by the stern Dr. Rose Harper. Upon arriving at the facility, he discovers that his father has hired Harper to 'cure' him before he can inherit his grandfather's fortune. Teaming up with fellow patient and aspiring artist Marie, Alex escapes from the facility, intending to return home to confront his father about his inheritance. Along their journey, they meet up with Zach, a reckless hitchhiker who joins them in their road trip adventure across New Mexico. As they travel together, Alex learns to accept his conditions while also forming romantic connections with Marie.
