In northeastern Brazil, a fabric salesman named José Araújo arrives at Jardim dos Caiacós and successfully sells his merchandise to Turkish shopkeeper Turco. At a celebratory ball, José meets Dualiba, Turco's forty-something-year-old virgin daughter. After they have sex, Dualiba tells her father, forcing José to marry her. Feeling resigned and humiliated as the town's laughing stock, José adopts the name Ojuara and embarks on a solitary journey through the countryside, becoming a legendary figure who has supposedly defeated both the devil and many bullies. Along his path, Ojuara encounters various women: Jacirene (a.k.a. Genifer), a beautiful woman in a brothel; Sue, an acrobat from a circus trapeze troupe; Mãe de Pantanha, an evil figure with a 'vagina dentata'; and Eleonora, the daughter of a powerful farmer. Throughout his adventures, Ojuara seeks redemption and ultimately aims to reach the paradisiacal São Sarué.
