Elena Anaya, born July 17, 1975 in Palencia, Spain, began her acting career in 1995. She gained international recognition for her role in 'Lucía y el sexo' (2001) and was praised for her performance in Pedro Almodóvar's 'Hable con ella' (2002). Anaya appeared as a vampire in the Hollywood film 'Van Helsing' (2004), playing Dracula's bride Aleera. She also starred in the 2006 Spanish historical drama 'Alatriste', portraying María de Castro, the love interest of the titular character played by Viggo Mortensen. In 2004, she was selected as one of European films' Shooting Stars by European Film Promotion.

In Pedro Telechea's 'El invierno de las anjanas' (2000), a young man from a lower class falls in love with Adelaida, a woman from a wealthy family. Their affair is abruptly interrupted when he is drafted to fight in the Cuban War of Independence. Upon receiving news of his death in combat, Adelaida refuses to believe it and remains devoted to him. Her family, led by her jealous sister Maria, perceives this as madness and commits Adelaida to an asylum. There, she befriends other inmates who tell her about mythical wood-nymphs living in the nearby forest.
