Elena Anaya, born July 17, 1975 in Palencia, Spain, began her acting career in 1995. She gained international recognition for her role in 'Lucía y el sexo' (2001) and was praised for her performance in Pedro Almodóvar's 'Hable con ella' (2002). Anaya appeared as a vampire in the Hollywood film 'Van Helsing' (2004), playing Dracula's bride Aleera. She also starred in the 2006 Spanish historical drama 'Alatriste', portraying María de Castro, the love interest of the titular character played by Viggo Mortensen. In 2004, she was selected as one of European films' Shooting Stars by European Film Promotion.

Hierro follows Mary, a woman who loses her son Diego during a ferry ride to the island of Hierro for their holidays. Six months later, Mary receives an unexpected phone call informing her that a child's body has been found on the island, and she must return to identify it.
