Frances Louise McDormand, born Cynthia Ann Smith on June 23, 1957, is an American actress known for her versatile roles across film, stage, and television. She began her career on stage before making her screen debut in 'Blood Simple' (1984). Notable films include 'Mississippi Burning' (1988), 'Short Cuts' (1993), 'Fargo' (1996), 'Almost Famous' (2000), and 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' (2017). McDormand has received numerous awards, including two Academy Awards for Best Actress ('Fargo' in 1997 and 'Three Billboards' in 2018). She is married to filmmaker Joel Coen since 1984, with whom she resides in New York City with their adopted son Pedro.

Recently graduated psychiatrist Sam and his fiancée Alex move to Los Angeles for Sam's residency, settling in Sam's mother Jane's house in Laurel Canyon. Despite claiming to be finishing a record, Jane seems more interested in her hedonistic lifestyle with her new boyfriend Ian. Initially, Alex is focused on completing her genomics dissertation but soon finds herself drawn into the rock'n'roll lifestyle around her. Meanwhile, Sam becomes increasingly distracted by his attractive Israeli intern Sara. As the couple's relationship strains under these influences and temptations, they must confront their changing dynamics.
