In 1958 New York City, Diane Arbus (Nicole Kidman), a woman from an affluent background, leads a frustrated and lonely life within her conventional marriage to Allan (Robert Caryle), a photographer whose career is supported by Diane's wealthy parents. She works as his assistant but yearns for personal fulfillment. When Lionel Sweeney (Hugh Dancy), a mysterious man afflicted with hypertrichosis or werewolf syndrome, moves into the apartment above theirs, Diane becomes captivated by him and his outsider status. Their attraction grows, and Diane begins to explore the world of 'freaks' and marginalized individuals through her encounters with Lionel. As she falls in love with him, Diane finds her artistic voice and starts taking photographs that reflect her new perspective on life.
