Elisabeth Judson Shue, born October 6, 1963, is an American actress known for her roles in 'The Karate Kid' (1984), 'Adventures in Babysitting' (1987), 'Cocktail' (1988), and 'Back to the Future Part II & III' (1989-1990). She won acclaim for her performance as Sera, a prostitute who takes in an alcoholic screenwriter played by Nicolas Cage, in 'Leaving Las Vegas' (1995). Cousin Bette is a lonely and impoverished seamstress who tries to insert herself into the lives of her wealthy brother-in-law Baron Hulot and niece Hortense after her sister's death. Rebuffed by them, she befriends and supports an aspiring young sculptor named Wenceslas Steinbock. However, Steinbock soon falls in love with Hortense, leaving Bette heartbroken and embittered. Determined to avenge herself on the family that has spurned her, Bette enlists the help of Jenny Cadine, a renowned courtesan, to systematically ruin their lives.
