John and Laura Baxter are in Venice rebuilding their lives after the drowning death of their young daughter. They encounter two elderly sisters; one claims to be psychic and sees their daughter's spirit. While Laura finds comfort in this belief, rational John dismisses it. However, he starts experiencing psychic flashes himself: visions of their daughter in her red cloak walking through Venice, as well as Laura and the sisters on a funeral gondola. As they delve deeper into the mysterious presence, tension builds between them, leading to tragedy.
