In 18th-century France, Suzanne (Pauline Etienne), a bourgeois girl with a talent for music, is sent to a convent against her will. Initially resistant, she discovers she's illegitimate and, feeling trapped, decides to become a nun. After the kind Mother Superior dies, she's replaced by the cruel Sister Christine (Louise Bourgoin) who humiliates Suzanne.
