She began her career as a dancer in dinner theatre before making her film debut in 'Drop Dead Gorgeous' (1999). Her breakthrough came with the independent comedy-drama 'Junebug' (2005), earning her first Academy Award nomination. Notable performances include leading lady roles in 'Enchanted' (2007) and assertive parts in 'The Fighter' (2010) and 'The Master' (2012). She portrayed Lois Lane in DC Extended Universe films from 2013 to 2017, won consecutive Golden Globe Awards for 'American Hustle' (2013) and 'Big Eyes' (2014), and received critical acclaim for roles in 'Arrival' (2016), 'Sharp Objects' (2018), and 'Vice' (2018).
