In 1950s Los Angeles, three detectives—Ed Exley (Guy Pearce), Bud White (Russell Crowe), and Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey)—investigate a high-profile murder case involving the massacre of patrons at an all-night diner using shotguns. The investigation leads them down a path of corruption within the LAPD, involving movie studios, city officials, and organized crime. Each detective pursues their own angle and forms alliances with different players, including a district attorney, a call girl named Lynn Brack (Kim Basinger), and a ruthless gangster. As they delve deeper into the conspiracy, they uncover a complex web of deceit, power, and revenge.
L.A. Confidential is a neo-noir thriller directed by Curtis Hanson and based on James Ellroy's novel of the same name. Set in the vibrant and corrupt world of post-World War II Los Angeles, the film pays homage to classic murder mysteries with its serpentine story, archetypal characters, and atmospheric tension. The movie explores themes of corruption within the police force, the darker side of Hollywood glamour, and the moral ambiguity of three detectives navigating a complex web of crime and power. Harking back to the noir films of old, L.A. Confidential is guided by Hanson's assured style and features fiery performances from its ensemble cast.
