Hayley Elizabeth Atwell, born on April 5, 1982, is a British-American actress known for her roles in period dramas like 'Brideshead Revisited' (2008), 'The Duchess' (2008), and the miniseries 'The Pillars of the Earth' (2010). She gained significant popularity as Agent Peggy Carter in several Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including 'Captain America: The First Avenger' (2011) and its spin-off series 'Agent Carter' (2015-2016). In rural Cambridgeshire, Ruth Gilmartin discovers that her mother Sally, now living under an assumed identity, is a Russian refugee who was once Eva Delectorskaya, a British spy during World War II. Eva's past missions included seducing American advisor Mason Harding to learn about the US's war intentions and supplying a map supposedly detailing a German invasion plan. However, she later uncovers inconsistencies in this map, leading her to believe she was betrayed by someone within her own network. Decades later, still paranoid about her safety, Eva buys a shotgun for protection. She tasks Ruth with contacting their former spymaster Lucas Romer under the guise of a journalist interested in wartime espionage, hoping to uncover the truth about the past. The two women eventually confront Romer at his home, where they learn the identity of the traitor after over thirty years.
