In 'Altered States', a research scientist named Dr. Edward Jessup experiments with drugs and sensory deprivation to explore the possibility of tapping into humanity's collective unconscious. As he delves deeper into his altered states, he begins to experience vivid visions that he believes are genetic memories from prehistoric times. These experiences cause him to physically mutate into a primal, savage form reminiscent of early man. When his body becomes infected with an alien organism brought back from the Amazon rainforest by his wife's shaman grandfather, his transformations become more extreme and dangerous.
