In Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet are young lovers from warring families in Verona. Despite their families' feud, they meet and fall deeply in love after a masquerade ball hosted by the Capulets. Their secret marriage is performed by Friar Laurence, who hopes it will unite their houses. However, when Romeo, believing Juliet dead due to a misunderstanding, kills Paris, Juliet's cousin, he must flee the city. Desperate to be together again, they drink a potion provided by Friar Laurence that puts Juliet into a death-like trance. The plan goes awry when Romeo returns to the Capulet tomb before Juliet awakens, leading him to take his own life upon seeing her seemingly lifeless body. Upon regaining consciousness, Juliet discovers both Romeos fate and takes her own life with his dagger.
