Tara Summers was born on December 19, 1979, and educated at Heathfield St Mary's School in Berkshire before graduating from Brown University with a B.A. in History. She further studied acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and the National Theatre Institute. Summers wrote and starred in her own one-woman theatrical show called 'Gypsy of Chelsea', which chronicled her mother's journey from cocaine addiction to recovery. Professionally, she is known for playing Katie Lloyd on Boston Legal (2007-2008), earning two SAG Award nominations for Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series.

In Factory Girl (2006), directed by George Hickenlooper, a wealthy young socialite named Edie Sedgwick drops out of Radcliffe College in 1965 to pursue her dreams of becoming an it-girl in New York City. She becomes captivated by the burgeoning art scene and meets influential pop artist Andy Warhol at one of his happenings. Impressed by her charisma and potential, Warhol takes Edie under his wing, introducing her to other notable figures like Bob Dylan and introducing her to drugs. As Edie's fame grows, she becomes a muse for Warhol and the face of his films, but her reckless lifestyle begins to take its toll. She struggles with substance abuse, mental health issues, and an unrequited love for Warhol, leading to a downward spiral that ultimately results in tragedy.
