Detective Nick Curran of the SFPD investigates the brutal murder of Johnny Boz, a former rock star found dead during sex. Catherine Tramell, a crime novelist and Boz's girlfriend at the time of his death, becomes the prime suspect due to her insatiable sexual appetite and eerily similar details in her latest story. Throughout the investigation, Catherine manipulates Nick with her cleverness and charm, leading him into a dangerous game of lust and suspicion. As their relationship intensifies, more bodies pile up, including that of Nick's rival detective, Nilsen. However, each new clue seems to contradict Catherine's involvement, forcing Nick to question his suspicions about her guilt.
Basic Instinct is a 1992 erotic thriller directed by Paul Verhoeven and set in San Francisco. The film follows the neo-noir genre conventions while also incorporating elements of American giallo and eroticism. It revolves around Catherine Tramell, a bisexual crime novelist suspected of murdering her lover Johnny Boz. As detective Nick Curran investigates the case, he becomes sexually obsessed with Catherine, who seems to be a manipulative femme fatale. The movie explores themes of sexual obsession, jealousy, sadism, and psychopathy, ultimately leaving the audience questioning whether Catherine is indeed guilty.
