In 1967, Susanna Kaysen (Winona Ryder) finds herself committed to Claymoore, a psychiatric hospital, after a suicide attempt stemming from a severe headache. Diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, Susanna meets an array of unique patients on the women's ward: Georgina Tuskin (Catherine Keener), a pathological liar obsessed with The Wizard of Oz; Polly Clark (Elisabeth Moss), a childlike schizophrenic; Janet Webber (Brittany Murphy), a sardonic anorexic; Daisy Randone (Angela Bettis), who refuses visitors and only eats her father's chicken; and Lisa Rowe (Angelina Jolie), a charismatic sociopath who manipulates other patients and staff. Throughout her 18-month stay, Susanna navigates the complex dynamics of the ward under Lisa's fluctuating influence. In the end, Susanna reclaims control over her life and leaves Claymoore.
