In Mexico, a wealthy patriarch offers a $1 million bounty for the head of Alfredo Garcia, who impregnated his underage daughter. Two American bounty hunters, Bennie and Tony, arrive in search of Garcia but struggle to find leads until they meet local piano player Elito, who has information about Garcia's girlfriend, a prostitute named Montes. Elito learns from Montes that Garcia is dead, and his body can be found near a lake. Seeing easy money, Elito, Bennie, and Tony embark on a journey to retrieve Garcia's head but soon realize they've been deceived as they encounter violent resistance from local gangsters and face a series of betrayals within their own group.
