She gained international recognition in the late 1990s with films like 'The Devil's Advocate' and 'Mighty Joe Young'. Theron won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Aileen Wuornos in 'Monster' (2003). Yards (2000) follows Leo Handler (Mark Wahlberg), a parolee trying to rebuild his life after serving time for theft. Upon returning to New York City, Leo is determined to go straight, but his past quickly catches up with him when he's offered a job by his childhood friend, Willie Darin (James Caan). Willie runs an illegal sports betting operation and convinces Leo to help him manage the bets while also keeping tabs on his girlfriend, Cheryl (Charlize Theron), who is being pressured by her gambling addict father to pay off his debts. As Leo navigates this complicated web of crime and deceit, he finds himself torn between his loyalty to Willie and his desire for a honest life with Cheryl.
