Homer Wells (Foster) is an orphan at St. Clouds in Maine who becomes the favorite of the orphanage's director, Dr. Wilbur Larch (Duvall). Over time, Homer learns all aspects of medicine from the doctor, becoming his skilled assistant despite not having a license. When a young couple, Wally and Candy (Woodman and Swank), arrive seeking an abortion, Dr. Larch performs the procedure safely but illegally. Candy becomes ill afterward, leading Homer to administer an experimental anesthetic. After Wally leaves for war, Homer goes with Candy to work at Wally's family apple farm. There, he learns about life outside the orphanage and forms a deep bond with Candy.
The film 'Cider House Rules' is a drama directed by Lasse Hallström in 1999, based on John Irving's novel of the same name. Set in the 1940s at St. Clouds, a Maine orphanage, the movie explores themes of orphanhood, abortion, and self-discovery through the protagonist Homer Wells' journey. The story highlights Homer's unique upbringing under Dr. Larch's tutelage, his role as an unlicensed physician assisting with abortions, and his eventual departure from the orphanage to experience life outside its walls.
