In ancient Rome, 37 A.D., Emperor Tiberius lies on his deathbed, his reign marked by depravity and insanity. His nephew, Gaius Augustus Germanicus, known as Caligula, is summoned from his military duties to the imperial palace on Capri. After Tiberius' murder, Caligula ascends to the throne and declares his beloved sister and lover, Julia Drusilla, as his equal, sparking outrage among the Senate. Over his four-year reign, Caligula's tyranny escalates: he demands absolute loyalty, indulges in debauchery, orders brutal executions, and eventually proclaims himself a god. The film explores political intrigue, incestuous relationships, and the unraveling of Caligula's mental state.
'Caligula' (1979), directed by Tinto Brass and written by Gore Vidal among others, is an exploitation film based on historical events. It chronicles the rise to power and tyrannical reign of Roman Emperor Caligula, played by Malcolm McDowell in a role that earned him critical acclaim despite the film's controversial nature. The film is notable for its explicit content, including sexuality and violence, which led to an X-rating upon release. Despite its historical setting, 'Caligula' is largely fictionalized and is considered more of an erotic thriller than a historically accurate biopic.
