In Paris, Jeanne (Maria Schneider), a young woman engaged to film director Tom, meets Paul (Marlon Brando), an American expat mourning his wife's recent suicide. They are drawn to each other and begin a passionate affair without revealing their names. Throughout their relationship, they explore intense sexual encounters, with Paul introducing Jeanne to new experiences like anal sex using butter as lubricant. Meanwhile, Paul struggles with his wife's death and his growing feelings for Jeanne, while Jeanne grapples with her love for Paul and her commitment to Tom. The affair comes to a head when Jeanne expresses her desire for them to be together permanently, but Paul, fearing the loss of his newfound independence, brutally rejects her.
