The movie 'Rubber' begins with a group of people gathered in the California desert to watch an unconventional film set in the late 1990s. The protagonist of this 'film within a film' is Robert, a sentient car tire who comes to life and goes on a rampage through a desert town. Robert becomes obsessed with a mysterious woman and uses his unexplained ability to make small animals and people's heads explode. Lt. Chad attempts to end the movie by poisoning the spectators but fails. In the final act, a lure is constructed to draw Robert out of his motel room in hopes of ending him once and for all.
