Pauline, a young widow from Paris at age 28, moves to the countryside seeking solace after her husband's recent death. She takes up residence in a farmhouse rented through her friend Catherine, who works at the local bank where Pauline also finds employment. Across the street lives François, an introverted man around Pauline's age, guarded by his authoritarian father and intrusive sister due to a traumatic childhood incident that scarred him deeply. Despite initial difficulties communicating, Pauline and François discover they share a common desire for change but lack the confidence to enact it. Over time, they begin to express their feelings openly, realizing each has the power to help set the other free.
