A famous Hollywood director, feeling dissatisfied with his life and marriage, drives into the Mojave Desert for a short getaway. He encounters a sociopathic drifter who stumbles into his camp. The encounter turns hostile, with both men seemingly wanting to kill the other. Upon discovering the director's identity, the drifter becomes aware of his personal life, including his young daughter and French actress girlfriend. Back in Los Angeles, the drifter starts making threats against the director's loved ones, playing a psychological game of cat and mouse.
